sPARkLINgWINEs INTHEMARCHE
Nowadays Italian sparkling wines are a qualitative and commer-
cial reality of greater and greater importance. Considering the
feedback we have had over the years, we continue to give the
sparkling wines of the Marche region correct consideration in our
publication.
The ones produced by our wine-producers stand out on the mar-
ket for the good result due both to the
producers’ expertise and the peculiarities of our territory, rich in
native vines that in terms of power, capacity and goodness are
very suitable to support the stressful processing required for the
production of this pleasant wine. Verdicchio, Pecorino, Passerina,
Maceratino, Biancame, Malvasia and many other white grapes,
including Trebbiano stand out in terms of preciousness having
demonstrated a unique vocation for sparkling wines, the same
can be said for the red grapes: Lacrima, Montepulciano, Sangio-
vese, and the Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, our DOCG wine and our
worldwide unique product. There is know- how in our wineries!
The producers do not improvise following new trends, sparkling
wines have always been produced in the Marche region and the
evidences are many, among them we mention the most impor-
tant one, the book “De Salubri Potu Dissertatio”, by the doctor
Francesco Scacchi from Fabriano, published in Rome in 1622. In
this work, whose title can be translated into “treatise on healthy
drinking”, in addition to medical considerations and health bene-
fits associated with the consumption of drinks, we find important
information on the technique of secondary fermentation of the
wine in the bottle, on what we now call “Classical Method” and
the French “Methode Champenoise”. The information and the
accurate descriptions contained in this document precede the
myth of Dom Perignon, the abbey of Hautvillers, to whom the
French tradition attributes the invention of Champagne, that da-
tes back to 1670. That is the reason why Italy, in particular the
Marche region, has a world record that certainly makes our tran-
salpine cousins envious.
We consider essential and crucial, especially in this period of
recession, to give the production of the sparkling wine in The
Marche a well-deserved importance, a big support and encou-
ragement in order not to lose an irreplaceable piece of our land
history.
