Fermo
The motto of the city of
Fermo is: Firmum signa-
ture fides Romanorum Co-
logne, which, translated
from Latin, means “Fermo is the city of firm faith, a Ro-
man settlement”. A honor that was awarded thanks to
the loyalty the city secured to the Romans during the
Punic Wars. Fermo (Firmum Picenum in Latin), a histo-
rical town in the south of the Marche, lies on the Col-
le Sàbulo, a name coming from the nature of its soil,
mainly tufaceous, (the Latin sàbulum stands for sand).
The area, which extends from the Adriatic coast to the
Sibillini Mountains, is dotted with houses according to
the custom of the agrarian sharecrop economy, which
included the presence of a family farmhouse on each
plot of land even of few hectares. The family run farm
used to be self-sufficient and produced or procured all
that was necessary for survival.
